A month after the #EndSARS massive protest against police cruelty which turned vicious and bloody resulting to loss of lives and wanton destruction of property, the Nigerian police are yet to recover from the mayhem. Policemen were rarely seen in public space.
Policemen who have the sole responsibility of protecting the residents are afraid to walk freely without fear of intimidation on the streets in their official uniform. Their morale is in all time low and they are yet to fully regain their confidence. However, in some places, hoodlums have taken advantage of the recent absence of police resulting to increase in crimes.
Findings showed that police personnel are not fully back on the streets in Ondo state and some other parts of the country for fear of possible reprisal attack. Some policemen who spoke on condition of anonymity declared that they still lived in serious fear and could barely walk freely on the streets.
In addition, the policemen attributed the main cause of the fear to two policemen who were gruesomely murdered during the protest. One policeman was roasted alive because the protesters sighted his police uniform in his car.
